Important Notice to the Valued Customers of Bayside Pharmacy Practice.
As you may have heard, the Australian Government has announced a new 60-day dispensing policy for many commonly prescribed drugs that will come into effect on September 1st, 2023.
This policy aims to provide more affordable access to essential medications for all Australians. However, its impact on individuals may vary and have not been thoroughly thought through, and tested, by the government before it was prematurely announced.
At Bayside, we are very concerned about the potential adverse effects that the new policy may have on our clients. These include an increase in Australian medication shortages and pharmacy closures in the local area. So, although cost savings may benefit some patients, others may miss out on the opportunity to have minor health conditions monitored at their usual pharmacy.
Equally concerning is the fact that extending dispensing to 60 days’ supply for some medicines poses a considerable risk of medication related misadventure. This is particularly the case for vulnerable individuals who rely on multiple medications. The increased volume of medication boxes can be confusing, potentially leading to medication errors.
We want to assure you that your safety is our top priority, and we are actively working to minimise any potential risks.
This policy amounts to a reduction in government funding for pharmacy services across Australia of over $3 Billion over 4 years and our pharmacy is not immune. We are currently having to review what we charge for all of the non-dispensing services we provide here at the Bay including our home delivery, vaccination, Webster medication packing and health check services.
Rest assured though; we will continue to explore options that prioritise your convenience while maintaining our commitment to affordability.
We are closely monitoring the developments and are hopeful that the government will do what they can to offset the more damaging aspects of this policy.
We will continue to provide timely updates through our social media channels to keep you informed and address any questions or concerns you may have.
